The Iron Bridge in Kyustendil – Blending Architecture, Culture and Symbolism

The Iron Bridge, also known as the “Bridge of the Naked Women,” is one of the most distinctive and photographed landmarks in Kyustendil. Built in 1909, it crosses the Banshtitsa River and connects the railway station to the central part of the city. Located in the heart of Kyustendil, it is only a 10-minute drive (approx. 3.4 km) from Casa Rosa Guest House and is within walking distance of most cultural and historical attractions.

Architectural Vision and Artistic Sculptures

Designed by Austrian engineer Rudolf Fischer, the bridge features a metal structure with ornate railings. Its true uniqueness comes from the four nude female statues positioned at both ends of the bridge, sculpted from white Vratsa stone by Bulgarian artist Lyuben Dimitrov.

Each statue represents an allegory – fertility, natural force, feminine energy, and militant spirit. A striking detail often overlooked is that the women are holding automatic weapons and rifles – a bold and provocative artistic concept that combines vulnerability with power.

A Place for Photos, Strolls and Discovery

Today the bridge is not only a heritage monument, but also a popular spot for photography and local meet-ups. Thanks to its central location, you can easily reach nearby attractions on foot:
